E-collars: Post-surgery care

E-collars: Post-surgery care

The why, when and how of E-collars.

Why it's important:

  • Helps to protect surgical wounds and stitches
  • Prevents possible infection from bacteria in the mouth
  • Helps to stop self-trauma (chewing, scratching or licking)
  • May reduce the need for repeat procedures

When your pet should wear it:

During the entire healing period (duration to be advised by vet)

Even a few minutes without the collar can be enough for your pet to damage their wound!

Helping your pet adjust

  • Raise food and water bowls, or remove the collar during supervised feeding
  • Ensure your pet has space to move around without bumping into objects
  • Keep their environment calm and quiet
  • Add soft tape to the edge of the collar to reduce noise and startle
  • Assist your pet with grooming by gently wiping their coat with pet safe wipes or a damp unscented cloth
