What is wrong with an excess amount of vitamin D?
While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues, depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure. Dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss. Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction.
My dog is exhibiting some of the symptoms above, what shall I do?
Pet parents with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed above and that are exhibiting any of these symptoms should contact their veterinarian. In most cases, complete recovery is expected after discontinuation of feeding.
I feed my pet other Hill's Pet Nutrition products, are these affected also?
No dry foods, cat foods, or treats are affected.
What can I do if I have one of the above products at home?
Pet parents who have one of the above products at home should discontinue feeding and dispose of those products immediately. To have discarded products replaced at no cost (either to an alternative Hill's product or a product from another brand), please visit the Animates store or Animates Vetcare clinic where you purchased the product, or for website purchases contact Animates Customer Services on 0800 Animates (0800 2646 2837). All requests for product replacements need to be completed by the end of July 2019. You can also contact Hill’s directly via their contact information below.
What are Hill's Pet Nutrition doing about it?
Hill’s Pet Nutrition learned of the potential for elevated vitamin D levels in some of their canned dog foods after receiving a complaint in the United States about a dog exhibiting signs of elevated vitamin D levels. Their investigation confirmed elevated levels of vitamin D due to a supplier error.
They care deeply about all pets and are committed to providing pet parents with safe and high quality products. Hill’s has identified and isolated the error and to prevent this from happening again, they have required their supplier to implement additional quality testing prior to their release of ingredients. In addition to Hill's existing safety processes, they are adding their own further testing of incoming ingredients.
